Illness shouldn't get
to cancel a birthday.

Brave Birthdays raises donations and handles the setup — cake, decorations, gifts — for birthday celebrations for patients of any age, facing any serious illness or extended hospital stay. Volunteers coordinate behind the scenes, and join in person only with the family and hospital's okay.

Our goal
Help patients of any age — facing cancer or any other serious illness — celebrate their birthdays with a meaningful celebration, designed around what they and their families want — coordinated with their hospital every step of the way.

For hospitals & care teams

Let us handle the party planning.

Brave Birthdays partners with hospitals and care teams to refer patients, coordinate logistics, and bring in approved volunteers and donor funding — so your team doesn't have to plan a party on top of everything else.

Our mission

A meaningful birthday, on the patient's terms.

Our goal is simple: help patients of any age — facing cancer or any other serious illness — celebrate their birthdays with a celebration designed around what they and their families actually want — never something we assume they need. Every celebration is coordinated with the patient's hospital and family from the very first conversation.

How it works

One process, coordinated with the hospital at every step.

No one shows up uninvited. Every celebration follows the same path, from referral to the day itself.

01

Hospital refers a patient

A hospital or care team identifies a patient who might want a celebration, and makes the introduction.

02

Patient chooses

The patient — with family, if they're involved — decides what kind of celebration they want, or whether they want one at all.

03

We coordinate

Brave Birthdays handles the logistics: scheduling, supplies, and matching approved volunteers.

04

Donor funding delivers it

Donations pay for the cake, decorations, and gifts. Approved volunteers set everything up — they join in person only when the family and hospital have both said that's welcome.

Please note

Mainly funding & setup — not always an in-person visit.

Brave Birthdays' main role is raising donations and coordinating the logistics of a celebration — the cake, decorations, and gifts — and getting them to the unit. Volunteers handle this behind the scenes. A volunteer stays to celebrate in person with the patient only when the family and the hospital have both clearly welcomed it — we never send someone to a patient's bedside without that approval from both sides.

An example journey

How one birthday works.

This is an illustrative walkthrough, not a real patient's story — it's here to show what the experience feels like from the patient's and family's side.

A patient or family reaches out

Through their hospital's care team, or directly to Brave Birthdays.

We plan around treatment

Dates and details are built around the patient's treatment schedule, not the other way around.

The family chooses the celebration

Theme, location, and guest list — their call, always.

Approved volunteers prepare

Cleared by the hospital and the family, volunteers get everything ready behind the scenes.

The birthday happens

Cake, decorations, and gifts are in place, hosted by the family and care team — a volunteer joins in person only if they've said that's welcome.

The patient and family get to focus on celebrating

Not planning, not coordinating — just being present for their day.

These are examples to show how celebrations will be shared with approved volunteers. Real listings will only include details the patient and hospital have approved for sharing — never a patient's full name, exact room, or medical information. Most volunteer spots are setup and logistics — cake drop-off, decorating, coordinating with the unit. A volunteer stays to celebrate in person only when the family and hospital have both said that's welcome.

Volunteering

Approved volunteers handle the setup.

Most volunteer roles are behind-the-scenes — coordinating supplies, decorating, and working with the unit before the celebration. We coordinate every celebration with the patient, their family, and the hospital care team, and volunteers follow all required hospital safety and privacy policies. Nobody joins a celebration, in any role, without being cleared first.

Apply and register

Volunteers apply through Brave Birthdays before joining any celebration.

Background checks where required

Depending on the hospital, volunteers may need to complete a background check.

Hospital and patient approval

Every volunteer is approved by the hospital, and by the patient or their family, before a celebration.

Safety & privacy rules

Volunteers follow each hospital's infection-control, privacy, and safety requirements.

In-person only with double approval

A volunteer stays to celebrate with the patient only when both the family and the hospital have said that's welcome. Otherwise, the role is setup and drop-off.

No guaranteed access

Volunteer availability does not guarantee access to a specific patient or celebration.

For patients & families

Never a cost. Always your call.

Patients and families never pay for a Brave Birthdays celebration. We work around treatment schedules and your preferences — a hospital celebration, something at home, or a small, private gathering.

We'll ask what would make the day feel special. We'll never ask for medical details.

Our standards

How we protect patients and families.

Brave Birthdays is still in its founding stage. These are the commitments we're building our process around — not claims of certifications or policies we already hold.

Patient & family consent

We will never coordinate a celebration without the patient's — and family's, where involved — clear, ongoing consent.

Hospital coordination

We will work directly with each hospital's care team on every celebration.

Patient privacy

We will only share what a patient, their family, and hospital approve — never a patient's full identity or medical information.

Volunteer screening

Volunteers will complete our application process and any background check a hospital requires.

Safety & infection control

Volunteers will follow each hospital's infection-control and safety policies without exception.

Financial transparency

We will share clearly how donations are used as Brave Birthdays grows.

Every patient facing a hard stretch of treatment deserves at least one day where the whole room is celebrating them, not just checking on them.

— Founder's note, Brave Birthdays

A new, developing organization

Brave Birthdays is a new, volunteer-run effort. We're building our hospital partnerships, safety processes, and legal groundwork from the ground up, and we'll share our progress openly as we grow.

Volunteer-run

We're not a big institution yet. We're building our processes and partnerships carefully, one celebration at a time.

Built with patients and families, not for them

We coordinate with patients, their families, and hospital care teams first, so every celebration fits them — quiet and small, or full of balloons.

However you'd like to help, there's a way in.

Apply to volunteer, ask your hospital to partner with us, request a celebration, or fund one directly.
